Ladakh — the roof of the world, where the sky turns impossibly blue and villages sit above 3,500 metres. Along the Indus, families gather thorny Seabuckthorn berries by hand each autumn — a fruit hardy enough to survive winters that would kill almost anything else. Shilajit, a mineral resin, seeps from granite cliffs only during the brief summer thaw, collected by locals who have read these mountains their whole lives. Every summer the orchards of Leh and Kargil turn gold with apricots, spread on rooftops and woven trays to dry in the high sun. Raktsey Karpo, the white seeded apricot with a GI tag of its own, grows nowhere else in the world. Along the old Silk Road, dried apricots were once traded like coin for grain, salt and wool.
